How to Use Jiffy-7 Pellets
- Preparation: Place the dry Jiffy-7 Pellets (indented side up) into a watertight tray or propagator base.
- Hydration: Pour warm water (approx. 20°C/68°F) over the pellets and watch them rapidly expand up to seven times their original height. This typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.
- Draining: Once fully expanded, pour off any excess water. The pellet should be moist and firm, not saturated or dripping.
- Sowing/Planting: Gently open the fine netting on top and either sow 1-2 seeds or insert your prepared cuttings (pre-dipped in a suitable rooting compound is recommended) into the small depression. Lightly cover the seed/cutting base.
- Growing On: Place the tray in a warm, suitable environment. Once roots are visible through the sides of the netting, the whole pellet is ready to be transferred to a Jiffy Pot, Jiffy Growblock, or your chosen final medium.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to remove the netting before I plant the pellet?
No, the netting on Jiffy-7 Pellets is biodegradable. It is specifically designed to remain intact during the propagation stage to hold the medium together and prevent transplant shock. The plant's roots will easily grow through the netting once potted on.How do I know when I need to add more water to the Jiffy Pellets?
When the pellets start to turn a noticeably lighter brown colour and feel lighter to the touch, they need re-watering. It is best to water from the bottom of the tray to allow the pellets to wick up the moisture, ensuring they are kept consistently moist but never waterlogged. Are Jiffy Pellets suitable for high-tech hydroponic systems?
Yes. Although often used in traditional soil or compost systems, Jiffy Pellets are an excellent inert starting medium for hydroponics. Products like Jiffy Preforma Plugs are also popular, but the Jiffy-7 is easily transferred into net pots or larger Jiffy Growblocks used in hydroponic set-ups.Can I use rooting hormone with Jiffy-7 Pellets?
Absolutely. While Jiffy Pellets contain a balanced base fertiliser for initial growth, using a quality rooting gel like Clonex or powder like Chryzotop Green 0.25% on your cuttings before insertion is highly recommended to accelerate root formation and maximise your propagation success rate.SKU: 1057 Free delivery on orders over £60*
